Risk Factors for GERD

Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are at significantly increased risk for GERD, and having GERD may worsen pre-existing COPD.

Medications

In February 2009, the FDA approved the long-acting, once-a-day proton pump inhibitor (PPI) dexlansoprazole (Kapidex) for treating GERD.
Proton pump inhibitors may increase the risk of hospital-acquired pneumonia by as much as 30 percent. Considering the large number of hospitalized patients who receive these drugs, PPIs could contribute to 180,000 cases of pneumonia in hospitalized patients each year, researchers say.

Surgery

Researchers find that endoscopy-based treatments for GERD may relieve symptoms and reduce the need for antireflux medications. Patients who have both endoscopic radiofrequency treatment and full-thickness plication (tightening the junction between the stomach and esophagus with sutures) reduced their use of proton pump inhibitors and improved their voice and swallowing symptoms.
Using high-intensity radio waves to remove precancerous esophageal tissue helps slow disease progression in patients with Barrett's esophagus, and it may also reduce the risk of esophageal cancer.
