La crioglobulinemia es causada por una proteína anormal que en ocasiones se encuentra en la sangre de personas que padecen mieloma múltiple, leucemia o ciertas formas de neumonía, la cual hace que la sangre se gelifique a bajas temperaturas. En esta fotografía, la crioglobulinemia ha reducido el flujo sanguíneo a los dedos con tal severidad que se han tornado oscuros. Las áreas negras son gangrena resultante de la falta de aporte sanguíneo.
