La inflamación de las encías es llamada gingivitis. Las bacterias presentes en la placa que rodea los dientes liberan las enzimas colagenasas, las cuales pueden dañar y erosionar los tejidos de las encías. Las encías infectadas se inflaman, sangran con facilidad, se retraen y se separan de los dientes. La gingivitis causa la pérdida de los dientes con mayor frecuencia que la caries dental.
