La biopsia de hígado no es un procedimiento de rutina; sin embargo, se realiza cuando se requiere determinar la presencia de una enfermedad hepática y para detectar cáncer, quistes, parásitos u otras patologías. El procedimiento en sí es ligeramente molesto. La mayor incomodidad radica en que el paciente debe permanecer inmóvil varias horas después del procedimiento para evitar el sangrado en el sitio donde se practicó la biopsia.
