En los casos de sangrado severo por rompimiento de una arteria mayor, es posible que la presión sea insuficiente y se requiera un torniquete. Los torniquetes son un método efectivo para detener el sangrado de una extremidad. Sin embargo, ellos sí interrumpen la circulación hacia el miembro afectado y SOLAMENTE deben usarse cuando otros métodos, tales como los vendajes de presión, hayan fracasado o se prevea que no funcionarán. La presión del torniquete debe ser aliviada periódicamente para evitar daños al tejido por falta de oxígeno.
