Los rayos X son un tipo de radiación electromagnética, así como la luz. Sin embargo, tienen una energía mayor y pueden penetrar en el cuerpo para formar una imagen sobre una película. Las estructuras densas, como el hueso, lucen blancas; el aire se ve negro y otras estructuras toman diferentes tonos de gris, dependiendo de su densidad. Los rayos X pueden revelar obstrucciones, tumores y otras enfermedades, especialmente cuando se combinan con el uso de bario y de contraste de aire en el intestino.
