El colesterol se encuentra en los huevos, productos lácteos, la carne de res y la carne de aves. Las yemas de huevo y las vísceras (hígado, riñones, molleja y cerebro) son ricas en colesterol. El pescado generalmente contiene menos colesterol que otras carnes, pero algunos mariscos son ricos en esta sustancia.

Los alimentos de origen vegetal (verduras, frutas, granos, cereales, nueces y semillas) no contienen colesterol.

El contenido graso no es una buena medida del contenido de colesterol; por ejemplo: el hígado y otras vísceras son bajos en grasa pero ricos en colesterol.
