Prevención:

Las prácticas sexuales seguras pueden ayudar a evitar la sífilis. En caso de que la persona sospeche que tiene una enfermedad de transmisión sexual como la sífilis, debe buscar asistencia médica de inmediato para evitar complicaciones como infectar el feto durante el embarazo o al nacer.

El cuidado prenatal es muy importante. Durante el embarazo, se hace un examen de sangre rutinario para sífilis. Con éste, se identifica a las madres infectadas y les permite recibir tratamiento con el fin de reducir los riesgos para el bebé y para ellas mismas. Los bebés nacidos de madres infectadas, que recibieron el tratamiento adecuado con penicilina durante el embarazo, tienen un riesgo mínimo de padecer sífilis congénita.
