Definición:

Es un bloqueo repentino en uno o en ambos conductos (uréteres) que drenan la orina desde los riñones.

La uropatía obstructiva unilateral es causada con más frecuencia por un cálculo renal, aunque cualquier lesión u otra afección pueden causar el trastorno.

Cuando se bloquea el flujo de orina, ésta se represa en los riñones y lleva a que se presente hinchazón renal (hidronefrosis).

Una persona tiene mayor riesgo de padecer uropatía obstructiva unilateral si tiene cálculos y tumores ureterales, cálculos renales y tumores en sitios cercanos como el útero y el cuello uterino.

La uropatía obstructiva unilateral aguda se presenta en 1 de cada 1000 personas.
