Virus de la hepatitis D

Definición:

El agente delta es un tipo de virus llamado hepatitis D que ocasiona síntomas sólo en personas que padezcan la infección por hepatitis B.

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:

El virus de la hepatitis D (VHD) sólo se encuentra en personas portadoras del virus de la hepatitis B y es un virus que puede empeorar una infección por hepatitis B o una enfermedad hepática por hepatitis B preexistente. Este virus puede causar síntomas en personas con hepatitis B que nunca tuvieron síntomas.

La hepatitis D infecta a alrededor de 15 millones de personas en todo el mundo y se presenta en el 5% de la población que padece hepatitis B.

Los factores de riesgo abarcan:

  • Haber tenido infección por hepatitis B en el pasado
  • Ser portador del virus de la hepatitis B
  • Recibir muchas transfusiones de sangre
  • Drogadicción por vía intravenosa
  • Hombres que tienen relaciones homosexuales
  • Estar infectada durante el embarazo, ya que se le puede pasar el virus al bebé
