El neumotórax traumático ocurre cuando una lesión física hace que el pulmón colapse. Puede ser el resultado de una lesión en el tórax a raíz de un disparo con arma de fuego o heridas con cuchillo. También puede ser causado por accidentes automovilísticos o puede ocurrir después de ciertos procedimientos médicos.
Los procedimientos médicos de alto riesgo abarcan biopsia transbronquial, biopsia pleural, toracocentesis, colocación de un catéter venoso central, anestesia por punción intercostal y esofagoscopia.
